Champion of House Redoran by Swietopelk Champion of House Redoran by Swietopelk
Yet another Concept Art for Skywind. It's a traditional, native Dunmer version of the Ebony Armour (as opposed to previous - Imperial). It's main decoration motif is a scarab. First, because it is mostly found amongst high - ranking Redoran members (and scarab is their symbol), and secondly, because it's black and shiny and it just fits.

This is really cool as well.  I really love the Dunmar's style of armor and weapons.

I strongly approve of the armor variations you've been doing. Sure, the lore fiends may whine about the only ebony in Morrowind and Oblivion being black/gold, but there also happened to be an overabundance of the armor in Morrowind from what I gather, so this kinda offsets that. Also you're taking the unique theme's of Morrowind and pretty much turning them up to eleven, while also making it clear that this style is unique to the location. That really adds to what people seem to get out of that game. Of course I'm unfortunate enough to have never played it myself, though I found I had an odd nostalgic feeling when visiting Solstheim, dunno why. I should really play a Dunmer on my next run of Skyrim.

We have lore fiends too, hell, I'm a TES lore freak :P Luckily they approve of my armours, because I try to find a suitable place for them in the context of the world. And for the lovers of black and gold ebony - there is the Imperial variant ;)

It looks really great. Maybe a suggestion would be to consider the fabric to be more red than violet, as it seems to be more the house's color (thinking of the Red book of 3E426)

Yeah, that suggestion has been said so many times. I'm sticking with violet for several reasons. First, it just looks more rich. Secondly, it creates a dissonance with black, making the armour seem much more menacing. Thirdly - red and black combo made it look like a Dagoth armour... Which is not the best in this case.

Uhm, yes indeed, we don't want Lorkhan red...
Have you considered a purple kind of red? maybe that would be an interesting compromise, some kind of violet burgundy shade...

Yeah I love this, this is perfect. Only problem is the black to silver here comes off the same way as in the dremora armor and the orcish has a very similar color scheme as well. Of course, if this is all actually more of a matte black all over with no silver just light glare... that would be pretty cool. Totes love the purple though.

It's not an accident with the Dremora, as Daedric Armour is also made from ebony. As for Orcish - not sure, but to me it's a completely different colour scheme :P

Sweet. I think I read somewhere that ebony in morrowind was made of obsidian? www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Eb… here is says it's a rare form of volcanic glass... and the raw ebony page says it's a black glass like substance, unlike how it looks in Skyrim... (maybe they're secretly different materials?? or just different techniques? It's my favorite heavy armor in skyrim, as much of a fan I am of the higher armor ratings of dragon and daedric.)

Will you be designing Dreugh armor? And is the armor split going to be light medium heavy?

Ebony is not made from obsidian. It's crystalised blood of a god. It can be (according to our extended lore) worked in different ways, to either cool it rapidly and get it smooth and looking like a jet stone, resulting in a bit softer but flexible oily material (the one armour is made of); or if cooled slowly it would form big, extremely hard and sharp obsidian - like crystals, that are mostly used for weapon blades.

Dreugh armour is already modelled and it's pretty good, so not much need for a design. And for now we don't know if we're going to split armour types further, not likely though.

There's no actual proof that it is the blood of a god--though Lorkhan's blood would make sense--it's just called that. At most it's called volcanic glass, and the most real world comparison is obsidian. The chemical makeup is probably not the same, but the argument has just as much validity as calling it the blood of god.

As to the extended lore, please reference where you got your information from.

Have you considered doing some concept art for House Indoril? To be completely honest, I absolutely love your work, and if it's alright with you, I might include it in a fan-fic of mine about House Redoran, should I ever get back to posting it on BethSoft's forum.

All of these TES armor designs are just wicked awesome. I love how they're rendered, with the heavy paint-like colors, and the shine on the armor and jeweled pieces looks great on all of them. The 3D render in a comment above looks very true to this piece and I look forward to seeing this project as it progresses! Beautiful work.

Thanks! You probably won't be able to buy it in an instance though, since it's a pretty hard thing to come by :D I'm personally directing the modeller who is going to make it, so even if it's not 100% the same, it will have to get through my critique ;)

Nice, I do like it when they take the opinion of the artist into account, and being the halfway point for the modeller really is the best way of illustrating that opinion.

I most certainly am, it's looking awesome so far, I have to say. I never liked the Skyrim Ebony, nor it's Daedric or any of it's higher tier armours honestly, and this looks a lot better than said Skyrim Ebony. It's an awesome take on an armour that's supposed to convey a sense of awe and subtle royalty, and I think you've conveyed that really well here. I look forward to the finished product, and I hope it's bottom half is as good as it's top... That sounded slightly perverted...
